*County and Federal VA benefits:
Survivors of a veteran, widow of a veteran or wife of a veteran may be eligible for some of the following death benefits at county and/or federal levels. For survivors to receive benefits at the county level, the veteran must have served during wartime and been honorably discharged. To receive benefits at the federal level, the veteran must have been receiving military compensation or pension benefits at the time of death, and/or have passed away at a VA Medical Facility. Also the veteran must have been honorably discharged. We appreciate the service of our veterans and take care of applying for these benefits.
Erie County level:
When a veteran, widow of a veteran or wife of a veteran dies, the next-of-kin is entitled to receive certified copies of the death certificate at no charge. When a veteran or widow of a veteran dies, a $75.00 burial allowance is payable, again if the veteran served during wartime. DD-214 papers must be furnished ahead of time in order for the funeral home to apply for the free certified copies of the death certificate and/or the VA benefits.
